Week 10

Finishing with something to be proud of

The course ends with a Cook Your Plate competition in week 9 and a graduation ceremony in week 10, where every participant receives an official Care & Culinary baking certificate.

It matters more than it sounds. For a lot of participants it is the first certificate they have earned, in front of the people who supported them to get there.

What it builds

Skills that carry on after the session ends

A baking class is a practical way to work on goals that are hard to practise sitting down. Here is what participants are actually doing each week — useful language if you are matching this course to a plan.

  • Independent living

Following a recipe from start to finish, working safely around an oven, and cleaning down afterwards — the everyday steps of feeding yourself.

  • Planning and sequencing

Reading the method, gathering what is needed, and working through the steps in the right order, with staff stepping back as confidence grows.

  • Social connection

Working alongside the same small group every week, sharing a bench, taking turns, and talking while the timer runs.

  • Fine motor skills

Weighing, measuring, kneading, piping and decorating — steady, repeated hand work with an obvious reward at the end.

  • Kitchen safety and hygiene

Knife handling, hot trays, allergens and hand washing, taught in a way that sticks because it is used immediately.

  • Confidence and self-esteem

Ten weeks of finishing something, taking it home, and having someone enjoy it. The certificate at graduation is the part people show their family.
